Deadly Floods in Chile and Vietnam Leave Seven Dead, Hundreds Displaced as Extreme Weather Intensifies

Deadly floods triggered by torrential rain have killed at least seven people and displaced hundreds across Chile and Vietnam as rescue operations continue amid ongoing severe weather.

Severe flooding caused by torrential rainfall has left at least seven people dead across Chile and Vietnam, while hundreds have been displaced and widespread damage has disrupted daily life, infrastructure, and economic activity.

In Chile, relentless rain and powerful winds swept across central and southern regions, killing at least three people and forcing hundreds into emergency shelters. The Biobio region has been among the hardest hit, prompting President Jose Antonio Kast to personally visit affected communities and oversee relief efforts.

According to Chile’s disaster management agency, hundreds of residents have been evacuated, while others remain isolated due to rising floodwaters. More than a quarter of a million people have been left without electricity, schools have suspended classes in several areas, and mining operations at the state-owned Andina mine have been temporarily halted because of severe weather.

Authorities reported that the fatalities included a road worker clearing storm debris, a resident who fell while cleaning a roof, and another victim who died from an electric shock in Santiago.

Meanwhile, in Vietnam, heavy rainfall triggered a devastating flash flood in the mountainous northern province of Lai Chau. At least four people were killed, seven injured, and four remain missing as emergency responders continue search-and-rescue operations.

The flood destroyed numerous homes, while nearly one hundred additional houses remain under threat from landslides. Roads, electricity infrastructure, farmland, and crops also sustained significant damage, complicating rescue efforts and raising concerns about prolonged recovery.

These disasters once again highlight the growing impact of extreme weather events across the globe. Scientists continue to warn that warmer temperatures can increase the atmosphere’s capacity to hold moisture, contributing to more intense rainfall events in many regions. Governments are increasingly focusing on disaster preparedness, resilient infrastructure, and climate adaptation strategies to reduce future risks.

As emergency crews continue relief operations in both countries, authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert for additional heavy rainfall, flooding, and landslides over the coming days.
