Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing one of the most politically sensitive decisions of his leadership as pressure mounts over the future of Israeli military forces in southern Lebanon. While international efforts continue to push for full implementation of the ceasefire arrangements, political analysts argue that withdrawing Israeli troops could carry significant domestic political consequences for Netanyahu ahead of upcoming elections.

According to veteran journalist and former Associated Press regional chief Dan Perry, there is little political support within Israel for a military withdrawal from southern Lebanon. Speaking to Al Jazeera, Perry said Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition strongly opposes leaving the area, viewing the continued military presence as essential to preventing renewed security threats from Hezbollah. He also suggested that opposition parties, centrist politicians, and even many Israeli Arab representatives are unlikely to support a withdrawal under current security conditions.

The situation places Netanyahu in a difficult political position. A decision to remove Israeli troops could be portrayed by opponents as a concession that weakens Israel’s security posture, potentially damaging his standing among voters during an election campaign. On the other hand, refusing to comply with growing international pressure—particularly from the United States—could create diplomatic tensions with one of Israel’s closest allies.

Perry also noted that Netanyahu has invested heavily in maintaining strong relations with US President Donald Trump, while relations with several European governments and Democratic leaders in the United States have become more strained. This balancing act makes any decision on southern Lebanon increasingly complicated, as both domestic political survival and international diplomacy remain at stake.

Another major concern is the future security of southern Lebanon should Israeli troops eventually withdraw. Analysts say the success of any pull-out would depend largely on whether the Lebanese Armed Forces can effectively assume control of the border region and prevent Hezbollah from re-establishing military positions close to Israel’s northern frontier. Israel has repeatedly stated that preventing Hezbollah’s return to border areas remains one of its primary security objectives.

With Israeli elections approaching and regional tensions remaining high, Netanyahu’s decision on southern Lebanon is expected to become a defining political and security issue. The outcome could influence Israel’s domestic political landscape, its relationship with key international partners, and the broader stability of the Israel–Lebanon border in the months ahead.
