A deadly mountain collapse triggered by heavy rainfall has left at least eight people dead and 34 others missing in southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality, prompting one of the region’s largest emergency rescue operations.
The collapse occurred along the Wujiang River after persistent rainfall destabilized the mountainside, causing homes to collapse and trapping residents beneath debris. Rescue officials confirmed that ten people have been pulled to safety, while nearly 400 emergency personnel equipped with heavy machinery continue searching for survivors under difficult conditions.
China’s Ministry of Emergency Management activated a Level-II national emergency response shortly after the disaster, coordinating rescue operations involving multiple government agencies. Authorities also deployed specialized search teams, engineering equipment, and medical personnel to the affected area.
To support emergency operations and recovery efforts, China’s Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Emergency Management allocated 50 million yuan (approximately $7.36 million) in central disaster relief funding.
President Xi Jinping instructed emergency responders to conduct scientific and efficient rescue operations while prioritizing the prevention of secondary geological disasters. He also emphasized providing proper medical care for the injured, assisting affected families, and investigating the causes of the collapse to improve future disaster prevention.
The tragedy highlights the increasing risks posed by extreme rainfall and geological instability in mountainous regions. Climate-related weather events continue to place greater pressure on infrastructure, emergency preparedness, and disaster risk management across vulnerable areas of China.
As rescue efforts continue, authorities remain focused on locating the missing while monitoring surrounding terrain for additional landslides that could endanger both residents and rescue teams.
