Venezuela is facing one of its worst natural disasters in decades after two powerful earthquakes struck the country within just 39 seconds, leaving at least 32 people dead and more than 700 injured.
The first earthquake measured 7.2 in magnitude, followed moments later by a stronger 7.5 tremor. The twin quakes shook large parts of northern Venezuela and caused severe destruction across the capital, Caracas, and the coastal state of La Guaira.
Authorities say dozens of buildings have collapsed, trapping residents under rubble as rescue workers continue searching for survivors. Entire neighborhoods in Caracas, including Palos Grandes, Altamira, San Bernardino, and Baruta, suffered extensive damage, forcing thousands of families to spend the night outdoors amid fears of powerful aftershocks.
La Guaira has been declared a disaster zone after widespread structural failures and fires were reported throughout the region. Officials warn that casualty figures may rise significantly as emergency teams reach isolated communities and continue recovery efforts.
The disaster has also disrupted transportation and public services nationwide. Maiquetía International Airport was closed after sustaining major damage, while metro systems, train services, schools, and non-essential government activities remain suspended under a nationwide state of emergency.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquakes occurred along the boundary between the Caribbean and South American tectonic plates. The agency has issued a rare red alert, indicating the possibility of very high casualties and extensive economic losses, while warning that strong aftershocks could continue in the coming days.
International support is already arriving, with the United States, Mexico, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, and several other nations offering rescue teams, medical assistance, humanitarian aid, and emergency supplies.
The earthquakes struck during Venezuela’s national holiday commemorating the Battle of Carabobo, meaning many residents were at home when the disaster occurred. That timing may have contributed to the scale of injuries and destruction witnessed across the country.
