Russia launched a fresh wave of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine on Saturday, killing at least eight people and injuring dozens in one of the latest large-scale assaults targeting civilian areas. The attacks struck several major cities, including Sumy, Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Kyiv, causing widespread destruction to residential neighborhoods, transportation infrastructure, and public spaces.
The deadliest attack occurred in the northeastern city of Sumy, where glide bombs hit a busy civilian area, killing five people and injuring around thirty others. One bomb struck near a bus stop, severely damaging a passenger bus, while nearby apartment buildings also sustained significant damage. Additional attacks in Odesa killed two civilians, while strikes in Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv left several more injured.
Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, also came under a large overnight assault involving ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and more than one hundred drones. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted many drones and some cruise missiles but struggled to stop ballistic missiles due to an ongoing shortage of Patriot interceptor missiles and other advanced air defense systems.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded by calling for faster implementation of military assistance agreements with Western allies. He emphasized that previously approved defense packages, particularly air defense capabilities and Patriot missile production cooperation with the United States, must be delivered more rapidly to protect civilians and critical infrastructure.
At the same time, Ukraine continued expanding its own long-range drone operations against Russian military logistics. Ukrainian forces claimed successful strikes against numerous fuel tankers and support vessels operating in the Sea of Azov, aiming to disrupt Russian fuel supplies and military transport networks. Kyiv argues that sustained pressure on Russian logistics is intended to weaken Moscow’s operational capabilities and encourage future negotiations.
Russia, meanwhile, also reported casualties from Ukrainian drone attacks, including damage to vessels in the Sea of Azov and fatalities in Russian-controlled areas. The exchange underscores the increasingly technological nature of the conflict, with both sides relying heavily on drones, long-range missiles, and precision strikes.
