Thousands of people gathered in Bologna, northern Italy, after the death of a 42-year-old Moroccan man during a police arrest triggered widespread public outrage. The peaceful demonstration later escalated into violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement, leaving at least 11 people injured and causing significant property damage across parts of the city.
According to Italian authorities, police intervened after the man reportedly experienced a psychiatric crisis and behaved aggressively. Officers allegedly used pepper spray before restraining him, after which he later died. Italian prosecutors have opened a formal investigation involving two police officers and four emergency responders to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and establish the cause of death.
During the unrest, police deployed tear gas, pepper spray and water cannons as some demonstrators threw bottles, fireworks and other objects. Several vehicles were set ablaze, while buildings and public property in central Bologna were damaged during hours of confrontation.

Speaking before demonstrators, the man’s niece emphasized that the family’s demand is for “truth, justice and dignity,” rejecting hatred and violence. Their lawyer also condemned those engaging in criminal acts, stating that such behavior undermines the family’s pursuit of accountability.
The incident has sparked a broader political debate in Italy over police conduct, the handling of individuals experiencing mental health crises, and the need for transparent investigations into deaths occurring during law enforcement operations. Opposition parties have called for a thorough judicial inquiry, while members of the governing coalition have urged the public to await the results of the ongoing investigation.
