Hawaii has declared a state of emergency as Tropical Storm Lala strengthens toward hurricane status while approaching the Big Island, raising concerns over a potentially historic storm impact.
The National Hurricane Center forecast Lala to reach hurricane strength as it approaches Hawaii. A hurricane warning has been issued for Hawaii County, while Maui, Molokai and Kahoolawe are under tropical storm warnings. Residents have been urged to complete emergency preparations before weather conditions deteriorate.
The primary threats include hurricane-force winds, torrential rainfall, flash flooding, mudslides, dangerous storm surge, heavy surf and powerful rip currents. Forecast rainfall totals range from 8 to 12 inches across parts of Maui and the Big Island, with isolated locations on the Big Island potentially receiving up to 25 inches.
The storm is particularly significant because a direct landfall on the Big Island could become the island’s first hurricane strike since 1871. The last hurricane to make landfall somewhere in the Hawaiian Islands was Hurricane Iniki in 1992, a Category 4 storm that caused billions of dollars in damage and resulted in six deaths.
Officials have stressed that Lala does not necessarily need to make a direct landfall to cause serious destruction. Powerful winds, heavy rainfall and dangerous coastal conditions can produce severe impacts even when the center of a hurricane remains offshore.
Authorities are therefore urging residents to secure homes, clear gutters and drainage areas, remove loose outdoor debris, stay away from dangerous coastal zones and move to safer locations if their homes cannot withstand hurricane-force winds.
The developing situation also raises concerns about wildfire conditions. Hawaii has experienced devastating fires in recent years, and officials remain alert to the combination of dry vegetation and strong winds that can rapidly increase fire risks.
With Lala approaching during an unusually active Pacific climate pattern, residents and emergency officials are closely monitoring the storm’s track, strength and potential landfall.
