Two firefighters were killed while responding to a major fire near Bordeaux-Merignac Airport in southwestern France on Tuesday, marking another tragic incident as the country faces heightened wildfire dangers during an intense summer season.
According to French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, the firefighters died while battling a building fire near the airport. Authorities reported that the blaze began shortly after 2:00 p.m. local time as a brush fire before rapidly spreading, generating thick plumes of smoke visible across western Bordeaux.
Following confirmation of the fatalities, Nunez announced he would travel to the scene after being informed by regional officials from Nouvelle-Aquitaine and the Gironde department.
The incident comes amid a period of prolonged heat and drought that has significantly increased wildfire risks throughout France. On Monday, Meteo-France placed 27 departments under a high forest fire risk alert as soaring temperatures and dry vegetation created dangerous conditions for fast-moving fires.
