Russia and Ukraine exchanged another wave of long-range missile and drone strikes on Thursday, resulting in civilian casualties on both sides and intensifying the conflict beyond traditional battlefronts.
Ukrainian authorities said the death toll from Russia’s overnight assault on Kyiv rose to 17 as emergency crews continued rescue operations. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched 74 missiles and 496 drones, with the capital city serving as the primary target. Officials said dozens of projectiles struck multiple locations, causing widespread destruction and leaving debris scattered across numerous districts.
On the Russian side, regional authorities reported four civilian deaths linked to Ukrainian drone attacks. Casualties included residents in the Belgorod and Nizhny Novgorod regions, while Russian-installed officials in occupied Zaporizhzhia said two energy workers were killed during repair operations.
The Russian Defense Ministry stated that its strikes focused exclusively on military and defense-industry facilities, including infrastructure supporting Ukraine’s missile, air force and air defense programs. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated that the operations targeted military-related objectives in retaliation for what Moscow described as Ukrainian attacks on civilian infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Ukraine claimed responsibility for strikes on Russia’s Lukoil Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez refinery, a drone storage facility in occupied Zaporizhzhia, a railway bridge near Stanytsia Luhanska, and a Russian command center in the Kharkiv region. Independent verification of claims from either side remains difficult due to the ongoing war.
The latest exchange demonstrates how the conflict continues to evolve into a broader campaign of deep strikes on energy, military and industrial assets, with civilians increasingly caught in the crossfire.
