Syria Promotes Diplomacy Over Military Intervention
Syria’s President Ahmed al-Sharaa has reaffirmed that Damascus is willing to play a constructive role in helping resolve Lebanon’s ongoing political and economic challenges. Speaking in an interview with Al-Mashhad TV, al-Sharaa emphasized that Syria’s contribution would focus on supporting the Lebanese state, encouraging dialogue among political factions—including Hezbollah—and strengthening regional cooperation rather than pursuing any military role.
The president clarified that previous remarks regarding Syria’s potential involvement in Lebanon had been widely misunderstood. He stressed that Syria has no intention of becoming militarily involved and instead seeks to promote stability through peaceful engagement and diplomatic communication.
Focus on Economic Cooperation
Al-Sharaa highlighted the importance of rebuilding economic links between Syria and Lebanon, pointing to the long-standing trade relationships between Damascus and Beirut, as well as Homs and Tripoli. He said stronger economic corridors could benefit both countries by boosting commerce, improving connectivity, and supporting regional recovery after years of instability.
According to the Syrian president, economic cooperation should become the foundation for stronger bilateral relations and long-term regional stability.
U.S. Talks Centered on Regional Stability
The Syrian leader also disclosed that recent discussions with the United States focused on ending ongoing conflicts and addressing their humanitarian, political, and economic consequences for both Syria and Lebanon. While he did not provide specific details about the negotiations, he indicated that reducing regional tensions remains a shared objective.
What This Means for Lebanon
Syria’s latest position signals a shift toward diplomacy and economic engagement as key tools for addressing Lebanon’s complex political landscape. By emphasizing dialogue among Lebanese political groups and rejecting military involvement, Damascus appears to be positioning itself as a supporter of regional stability while seeking to restore economic ties with its neighbor.
As Lebanon continues to face political uncertainty and economic hardship, Syria’s proposal could become part of broader regional and international efforts aimed at encouraging dialogue, reducing tensions, and supporting long-term peace.
