Tensions between Israel and Lebanon have sharply escalated following intense overnight fighting in southern Lebanon, where the Israeli military reported that four of its soldiers were killed during combat operations.
In response to the incident, Israel’s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich issued a strongly worded statement calling for a harsh military response. He described the situation as a “tough morning” and said it was “time to speak with fire” and “open the gates of hell,” signaling support for intensified action against Lebanon.
Similarly, Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called for extreme retaliation, stating that “all of Lebanon must burn” in response to the deaths of Israeli soldiers. He further emphasized a doctrine of overwhelming force, arguing that Israel must demonstrate that attacks on its forces will result in severe consequences.
The remarks come amid already heightened regional instability, with ongoing cross-border exchanges of fire and concerns about further escalation between Israeli forces and armed groups operating in southern Lebanon. The rhetoric from senior Israeli officials reflects increasing political pressure within Israel for a stronger military posture in response to battlefield losses.
