Iran has sharply condemned what it says was a Ukrainian military attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, warning that the incident “cannot go unanswered.” According to Iranian authorities, the alleged strike killed one sailor and injured another, prompting Tehran to summon Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires for an official protest.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the attack as a “blatant violation of the UN Charter” and said he raised the issue during separate conversations with European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. He also accused Ukraine of acting in a manner that could broaden regional tensions.
The incident follows comments by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said Ukraine had achieved significant results through long-range operations in the Caspian Sea, including strikes against vessels allegedly involved in military cargo shipments connected to Iran, as well as a warship.
The exchange marks another escalation linking the Ukraine conflict with broader regional security dynamics, drawing increased diplomatic attention from European and Russian officials.
