A sharp political dispute has emerged in the United States after Democratic Senator John Fetterman criticised New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani for advocating enforcement of the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Speaking in a television interview, Fetterman argued that a mayor has no legal authority to order such an arrest and dismissed Mamdani’s comments as political theatre, calling him a “clown” and accusing him of appealing to political extremes.
Mamdani, however, maintained that while New York City itself cannot enforce the ICC warrant, the federal government has the power to join the International Criminal Court and execute the warrant if it chooses. His remarks followed a review of legal options by his administration concerning the ICC’s actions.
The controversy comes as Netanyahu is expected to travel to New York in September for the United Nations General Assembly, placing renewed attention on the ICC warrants issued in November 2024 against Netanyahu and former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Both Israeli leaders have rejected the allegations.
The disagreement also underscores broader divisions within US politics regarding Israel, Palestine and the role of international institutions. While Mamdani has argued that the United States should support international legal mechanisms, President Donald Trump has stated that Netanyahu will not face arrest while visiting the United States.
As Netanyahu’s UN visit approaches, the political debate is expected to remain a significant topic in both American domestic politics and international diplomatic discussions.
