North Africa has witnessed two major emergencies in quick succession, underscoring the growing challenges posed by extreme weather and public safety risks.
In Tunisia, emergency teams successfully contained a large wildfire that burned more than 30 hectares (74 acres) of forest in the northwestern province of Jendouba. Firefighters, military personnel, forestry officials and volunteers worked together to stop the blaze after it damaged homes, killed livestock and destroyed valuable agricultural resources including dry fodder and firewood. The wildfire spread rapidly across several villages near the Bouhertma Dam, an area that has experienced repeated wildfires in recent years. Officials say extreme heat, drought conditions and strong winds significantly increased the fire risk.
Authorities also confirmed that recent forest fires across multiple Tunisian provinces have now entered the monitoring phase, with emergency crews remaining on standby to prevent new flare-ups. Preliminary assessments suggest that another wildfire in Zaghouan alone damaged more than 400 hectares of forest, highlighting the country’s ongoing struggle with climate-driven wildfire threats.
Meanwhile, neighboring Algeria is investigating a deadly fire at a child welfare institution in the Mohammadia district east of Algiers. The blaze killed at least 11 people and injured 19 others, including several burn victims and individuals suffering from smoke inhalation. Firefighters rescued five people with disabilities and safely evacuated them while continuing efforts to extinguish the fire. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the incident, and investigations remain underway.
The two incidents have renewed attention on emergency preparedness, wildfire prevention, climate resilience and fire safety standards across North Africa. Experts warn that rising temperatures and prolonged drought conditions are likely to increase the frequency and intensity of wildfires throughout the Mediterranean region, making investment in disaster response and public safety infrastructure increasingly critical.
