Ukraine says at least 11 people were killed and 46 others injured after Russia launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone attack on Kyiv, triggering fires, widespread damage and ongoing rescue operations across the capital. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, debris from intercepted missiles and drones struck several districts, damaging residential and commercial areas while emergency crews continued search and rescue efforts.
Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed conducting the overnight operation, describing it as retaliation for what it called Ukrainian attacks on civilian infrastructure inside Russia. Moscow said the strikes specifically targeted Ukraine’s military-industrial complex, including drone manufacturing plants, fuel storage facilities, defense production sites, military airfields and infrastructure supporting missile, radar and armored vehicle production across Kyiv and several other regions.
The ministry stated that facilities connected to drone production, air defense systems, navigation technology, missile components and military fuel supplies were among the intended targets.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s General Staff reported carrying out strikes in Russian-controlled territory, including an operation that reportedly caused a power outage in Sevastopol, Crimea.
Russian authorities also said Ukrainian drones targeted military and port facilities in the Leningrad region overnight. Governor Alexander Drozdenko stated that Russian air defenses intercepted dozens of drones, although some infrastructure sustained damage. Separately, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that air defense systems destroyed 519 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions, including Moscow, Leningrad, Crimea and the Sea of Azov.
Independent verification of battlefield claims from either side remains difficult because of the ongoing conflict. The latest exchange underscores the continuing escalation of long-range missile and drone warfare, with both countries increasingly targeting strategic military infrastructure while civilians continue to face the consequences.
