US President Donald Trump said Iran still possesses “some capability” despite recent military setbacks, following an incident in which four drones reportedly targeted ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. According to Trump, US forces intercepted three of the drones, while one managed to strike a large vessel, causing limited damage without resulting in casualties.
Speaking at the Faith & Freedom Coalition’s 2026 Policy Conference in Washington, Trump argued that Iran’s naval, air, and missile infrastructure has been significantly degraded and claimed the country now has little remaining manufacturing capacity for military equipment. He also asserted that Iran’s leadership structure has been weakened in the aftermath of recent regional confrontations.
Trump described the attacks as a “foolish violation” of the existing ceasefire and warned that although Iran is not gaining ground militarily, it still retains the ability to launch strikes. The remarks came after the UK Maritime Trade Operations center reported that a cargo vessel near Oman had been hit by an unidentified projectile, damaging the ship’s bridge but causing no injuries or environmental harm.
The incident has renewed concerns over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy corridor through which a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas supplies passes. Rising tensions in the region continue to draw international attention as governments and shipping companies monitor the security situation closely.
