Iran Walks Out of Switzerland Talks After Trump’s Bombing and Kidnapping Threats

Iran suspended high-stakes talks with the US in Switzerland after Trump’s reported military and kidnapping threats intensified tensions and jeopardized progress toward a nuclear and sanctions agreement.

Iran has suspended high-level negotiations with the United States in Switzerland after President Donald Trump’s reported threats to bomb Iran and detain members of its negotiating team over the Strait of Hormuz sparked outrage in Tehran. The Iranian delegation described the remarks as unacceptable and protested what it called intimidation during sensitive diplomatic talks aimed at easing regional tensions.

Before leaving the negotiations, both sides reportedly made progress on a draft agreement that could ease US sanctions on Iranian oil exports and unlock frozen Iranian assets abroad. However, the suspension has created fresh uncertainty over the future of nuclear negotiations and broader diplomatic efforts. Iran insists that discussions must also address a ceasefire in Lebanon, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and sanctions relief before advancing talks on its nuclear program.

The diplomatic standoff comes amid escalating tensions across the Middle East, with continued Israeli military operations in Lebanon, renewed Iranian actions in the Strait of Hormuz, and increasingly confrontational rhetoric from Washington. While US Vice President JD Vance emphasized diplomacy and a desire to reset relations with Tehran, Trump’s comments have deepened mistrust, leaving the future of the negotiations uncertain and raising concerns about regional stability, global energy markets, and international security.
