Iran Announces Closure of Strait of Hormuz After Deadly Israeli Attacks on Lebanon

Iran has declared the Strait of Hormuz closed and warned ships to avoid the strategic waterway, citing Israeli attacks on Lebanon and alleged US ceasefire violations.

Iran has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes, following deadly Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon. The announcement marks a significant escalation in regional tensions and has raised concerns over global energy supplies and international shipping.

According to a statement broadcast by Iranian state television, the Khatam-al Anbiya Central Headquarters said the closure is an initial response to what Tehran described as Israel’s violation of commitments made under an agreement involving the United States.

The statement declared that all vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz would be halted, warning that additional measures could follow if what Iran calls “aggression” continues. Iranian officials stated that further actions may be taken to compel their adversaries to honor their obligations.

Separately, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy issued a warning advising all vessels to stay away from the Strait of Hormuz, stating that the safety of ships entering the area could not be guaranteed.

The IRGC blamed Israel’s military operations in Lebanon and alleged US violations of ceasefire commitments for the decision to close the strategic waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s busiest oil transit chokepoints, with a significant share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas exports passing through it daily. Any disruption to maritime traffic in the area could have far-reaching consequences for international energy markets, shipping operations, and global trade.

Iran’s announcement comes amid rapidly escalating tensions in the Middle East following intensified Israeli military operations in Lebanon. The situation remains highly fluid, and international observers are closely monitoring developments due to the potential economic and security implications.

Note: The claims regarding the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the stated reasons originate from Iranian official statements. Independent verification and confirmation of the operational status of the waterway should be sought from international maritime authorities and shipping organizations.
