Trump Criticizes NATO Allies Over Iran War Support, Demands Greater Alliance Loyalty

Trump accused several NATO allies of failing to adequately support the United States during the Iran conflict, while NATO chief Mark Rutte emphasized growing defense commitments and alliance unity.

US President Donald Trump has publicly criticized several NATO allies, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, for what he described as inadequate support during the recent conflict involving Iran. Speaking alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump expressed frustration with European partners, arguing that the United States continues to bear a disproportionate share of the alliance’s defense burden while receiving insufficient political backing from its allies.

Trump singled out Spain for what he called a lack of financial commitment to NATO, accusing the country of benefiting from the alliance without contributing enough. He also reiterated longstanding concerns about defense spending among European nations, emphasizing that the US maintains tens of thousands of troops across Europe and spends billions of dollars supporting regional security.

Despite his criticism, Trump praised NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and affirmed the importance of discussing the alliance’s future role and recent geopolitical developments. Trump stated that while the United States does not necessarily need additional financial contributions, it expects stronger loyalty and support from NATO members in times of international crisis.

In response, Rutte defended the alliance and highlighted significant progress in defense spending commitments among European countries and Canada. He credited Trump’s leadership for helping secure a pledge from NATO members to increase defense expenditures toward a target of 5% of GDP. According to Rutte, allied nations are already moving toward narrowing the spending gap with the United States, with defense budgets increasing substantially over the past year.
