Moscow has been hit by one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks since the start of the full-scale war, targeting key energy infrastructure including the Kapotnya oil refinery. The massive overnight strike triggered large explosions and intense fires, sending thick black smoke across parts of the Russian capital and surrounding regions.
Residents in south-eastern Moscow reported unusual “black rain” and oily particles falling from the sky, sparking concern over air quality and environmental impact. While local authorities denied any official contamination, they advised people in affected areas to keep windows closed and urged vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and asthma patients to evacuate if necessary.
According to Russian officials, hundreds of drones and missiles were intercepted across the country, though several still managed to reach strategic targets. The attack led to injuries, major disruptions at Moscow’s airports, and widespread flight cancellations.
Ukraine described the strike as a response to recent Russian attacks on Kyiv, while continuing to escalate long-range drone operations aimed at key Russian infrastructure. The ongoing exchange of strikes highlights the growing intensity of the conflict and its increasing impact on civilians far from the front lines.
As both sides intensify aerial warfare, concerns are rising over infrastructure security, environmental risks, and the widening scope of the war across the region.
